Jeffrey Sunshine is an Acting
Justice of the Supreme Court presently assigned to the matrimonial part in Kings County
Supreme Court. In March of 2007, Judge
Sunshine was appointed the first Supervising Judge for Matrimonial Matters for
Originally appointed to the
bench by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in July 1998, Judge Sunshine was reappointed on
December 16, 2003, to a ten-year term by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He was designated
as Acting Supreme Court Justice in January 2001. He is a former President of the Brooklyn Bar
Association and served as Chair of the Family Law Section for over ten
years. He had been involved in the
matrimonial field extensively for nearly 18 years before becoming a judge. He was a member of the House of Delegates of
The New York State Bar Association for 12 years and served as Chair of the
Special Committee on Judicial Discipline.

As a practicing attorney, Judge Sunshine was a member of the Grievance Committee for the Second and Eleventh Judicial Districts and continues to serve as a member of the Statewide Committee on Matrimonial Practice chaired by Justice Jacqueline Silbermann, and as a member of the Statewide Domestic Violence Task Force. He has served as a member of the “Matrimonial Commission” established by Chief Judge Judith Kaye. Judge Sunshine was the co-chair of the Commission’s subcommittee--“The Role & Function of the Judiciary and Court Administration”. He also served as a member of the “Best Practices Committee for Matrimonial Judges.”
His opinions are published by the New York Law Journal and
State Reporter and he frequently lectures at judicial training seminars and for
bar associations. In 2003 Judge Sunshine received the Ecumenical Award from the Catholic
Lawyers Guild,
