John A. Cirando
John A. Cirando graduated from St.
Bonaventure University in 1963 with a BA in History. He earned his J.D. from SUNY Buffalo, School of Law
in 1966 and began his legal career with D.J. & J.A. Cirando,
Esqs.,
in Syracuse, New York.
He served in the Judge Advocate General Corps of the United States Army
from 1967 to 1971. His lengthy career
with the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office began in early 1971 with a
position as Assistant District Attorney, ultimately becoming the Chief
Assistant District Attorney and serving, as such, until 1987. In 1990, he was appointed and continues to
serve as an Examiner of Accounts of Conservators and Guardians. In 1997, he was appointed to the Governor’s
Judicial Screening Committee for the Fourth Department, where he served as
Chairman from 1997-2006, and continues to serve as a member. He was originally appointed to the New York
State Law Revision Commission by Governor Pataki in 2006, and was reappointed
by Governor Paterson in 2009. Following
his appointment in 2007, he continues to serve on the Independent Judicial
Election Qualification Commission for the 5th Judicial
District. Most recently, in 2009, he was
appointed to the Commission on Judicial Nomination by Assembly Minority Leader
Brian Kolb and to the New York Interest on Lawyer Account Fund by Governor
Paterson. He is recognized as a 2009 New
York Super Lawyer. Vera House honored
him with the Sister Mary Vera Recognition Award; he has served as Vera House’s
General Counsel since 1988. He has been
a member of the Loretto Health and Rehabilitation
Center Board of Trustees, since 2004. He
is a member of numerous Bar Associations and civic organizations. He has lectured widely at various CLE in
appellate practice and was an adjunct professor at Syracuse University College
of Law. Cirando
concentrates his practice in Appellate Advocacy and has appeared in all four of
the Appellate Divisions, as well as both the State and Federal Court of Appeals.
