BARBARA ELLEN HANDSCHU is engaged in a trial and appellate
practice throughout the State of New York
with offices in Buffalo and New
York City. She is Special Counsel to Mayerson Stutman, L.L.P. Her
practice is limited to family law cases. In the field of family law, Ms. Handschu has gained recognition in custody litigation and
complex trial work. She has lectured and written extensively in the area of
geographic relocation (whether a parent may move a child intrastate, interstate
or out of the country) and custody jurisdiction.
Ms. Handschu is President of the American Academy
of Matrimonial Lawyers. She served
as a Vice President of the American Academy
of Matrimonial Lawyers for five
years. A founding Diplomate of the American
College of Family Trial Lawyers and
founding Fellow of the IAML, Ms. Handschu has been
active in many organized bar association activities. Ms. Handschu
was the President of the New York Chapter of the AAML and a past-chair of the
Family Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. She has been a
Delegate-at-Large on the national Board of Governors for the Academy and served
as the Editor-in-Chief of the Academy Journal, sitting on the Editorial Board
since its inception. She previously chaired the Academy's Special Concerns of
Children Committee and has worked with that Committee in formulating AAML
Standards for Representing Children and the AAML Model Relocation Act and has
recently been appointed as an observer to NCCUSl's
drafting Committee on Standards for Representing Children. She is a past
Co-Chair of the American Bar Association Custody Committee of the Family Law
Section. For the past 18 years she has taught at the ABA Advanced Family Law
Trial Advocacy Institute and is co-chair of the program.
